25 Questions that will shape your character
Crafting a detailed backstory for your D20 Modern character will help you better understand their motivations, personality, and role in the world. Here's a list of questions to get your creative gears turning. Think of this as a job interview with your character, what do you want to learn about them, and what makes them tick. Ask yourself as many of these questions about your character that it takes to really give yourself a good idea of what your character is all about.
What was unique about your childhood?
Who were your parents or guardians, and what was their role in your upbringing?
What significant events or traumas shaped your early life?
What inspired you to choose your current occupation or class?
Do you have any close friends or allies, and how did you meet them?
Have you encountered any rivals or enemies who have crossed your path?
What are your long-term goals and aspirations?
Do you have any personal beliefs or convictions that guide your actions?
How do you react to challenges and obstacles in your life?
What is your proudest accomplishment so far?
What is your deepest regret or failure, and how does it affect you?
How do you feel about the current state of the world, and what would you change if you could?
What are your fears or phobias, and how do you cope with them?
What kind of relationships do you have with others (romantic, platonic, professional, etc.)?
Do you have any secret or hidden talents/skills that others might not know about?
How do you handle authority figures or rules you disagree with?
What do you value most in life, and what would you be willing to sacrifice for it?
Do you have any quirks, habits, or rituals that define your character?
What is your attitude towards technology, and how comfortable are you with its use?
What is your stance on supernatural phenomena or beings if they exist in your game world?
How do you react to morally ambiguous situations or decisions?
What is your most treasured possession, and what sentimental value does it hold?
How do you feel about teamwork and collaboration?
What kind of legacy do you hope to leave behind?
What personal code or principles do you follow, if any?
Answering these questions will provide a solid foundation for your character, enabling you to role-play them more convincingly and engage with the game world on a deeper level. Remember, don't be afraid to explore your character's strengths and vulnerabilities; it's the perfect recipe for a memorable and well-rounded hero in the world of Empire's Veil.
